Chelsea set for close look at £45m gem as Lille Champions League clash offers transfer alert
Back in December when Chelsea were coupled with Lille for the second time, due to UEFA messing up the last 16 draw the first time, there was general relief around Stamford Bridge.
Mainly due to the fact Thomas Tuchel’s men could have been drawn against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid due to finishing second to Juventus in the group stage.
But facing the Ligue 1 champions offers the Blues a great chance to reach the last eight of Europe’s elite competition for the second season running.
What this tie also provides is a very close look at the highly-rated forward Jonathan David who has been linked with the Blues in recent months.
David has 16 goals in 33 appearances, three in six in the Champions League and 12 in Ligue 1. At 22 and valued at £45m by TransferMarkt, the forward is quickly becoming a hot prospect and is likely to be on the move within the next year.
A brief overview of his skillset makes him a dynamic threat in the modern game. Nimble feet, low centre of gravity, speed and a calm head in front of goal.
Although Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side is set up in a traditional 4-4-2, David’s mobility allows him to drift wide, almost looking like a wide player in his skill to dribble past opponents and drop deeper to assist in the buildup of attacks.
David has been linked with a number of top European clubs, one of those Chelsea who still lacks a prolific scorer in the final third despite breaking the club’s transfer record to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club last summer.
The excitement of David’s talent is nothing new, nor the clamour of some to see Chelsea pursue him in the future.
However the forward does come into this tie after a run of six league games without a goal, only winning two as the current champions sit 11th in the table, unlikely to retain Champions League football for next season.
Although David falls into a bracket of developing attackers thriving in the competition this year, Chelsea’s attacking issues stem much deeper than one thing.
David’s profile would be severely heightened by a return to goals against the reigning European and World champions. But his growing talent offers a trendy quick fix to Chelsea’s much deeper problem.
Part of the problem with recent recruitment has been the feeling they stem from opportunity rather than surgical planning.
Players like David could potentially be wise investments if Tuchel’s attacking cast was settled and clarified.
But interest over the Lille forward just feels like more reactive planning over the next big thing rather than resolving a problem at your front door.
Thomas Tuchel’s biggest challenge against Lille is demonstrating his current cast can start to provide the output expected.
Chelsea news: Hugo Ekitike transfer bid readied as Liverpool set to rival Blues
Chelsea are reportedly lining up a £33million bid for highly-rated Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.
The 19-year-old has impressed for the French club this season, bagging nine goals and two assists in 20 Ligue 1 matches.
But Erling Haaland’s pending departure from Borussia Dortmund means the transfer could hit a snag.
It comes as Liverpool’s new ambition shows they are ready to rival Chelsea – and follow Jamie Carragher’s advice.
And former manager Antonio Conte has blasted Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing struggles in the transfer market after missing out on his two top targets during last month’s window.
Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has bemoaned his new club Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles in the transfer market.
Spurs brought in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski in the final hours of the window, but were ultimately left frustrated at missing out on top targets Adama Traore and Luis Diaz.
The Italian’s moaning about transfers is nothing new, and Chelsea fans will be familiar with the tone Conte has now taken with his new side.
But he’s been left unhappy with Spurs’ work in January, which he says ‘on paper weakened’ his squad.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have set themselves a bold new ambition – which proves they have followed Jamie Carragher’s advice to ‘become more like Chelsea’.
Earlier in the season, Reds legend Carragher said his former club must follow in Chelsea’s footsteps and start challenging for silverware every season.
And Trent Alexander-Arnold’s latest statement about the club’s ambitions shows the Reds are ready to rival Chelsea for silverware.
Chelsea have reportedly got a £33milion bid ready for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, who has been dubbed the ‘next Kylian Mbappe’.
Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also said to be keen on bringing in the young Frenchman, although Borussia Dortmund could provide the main competition for his signature.
That is due to reports that the German side want Ekitike to replace Erling Haaland, who appears set to depart the club when a £67million release clause kicks in on his contract this summer.
Ekitike reportedly snubbed a January transfer window deadline day move to newly-rich Newcastle United in order to see out the remainder of the season with his boyhood club Reims.
The Blues will therefore face a challenge to secure the player’s signature come the end of the season.
Liverpool just got ‘best in the world’ transfer hint from Pep Guardiola as FSG have £20m option
“One of the best players in the world today.”
Pep Guardiola is no stranger to a bit of exaggeration. In fact, Twitter was awash with predictions about what he might say as his Man City side cruised to a completely comfortable 5-0 win over Sporting Lisbon — in the end, he focused exclusively on the first five minutes to illustrate what a ‘tough’ match it had been. However, while this is proof that his words must be taken with a huge pinch of salt, FSG would be wise to heed the player whom he singled out for praise. He could make an ideal Liverpool transfer target.
Matheus Nunes is not a major household name. Or, at the very least, not as established as one might expect for someone identified by Guardiola as among the world’s best. However, it is not hard to see why the Catalan is impressed. The 23-year-old, who was playing in the sixth tier just three years ago, has become a mainstay in the Sporting side that has reached the Champions League knockouts for the first time since 2008/09.
A central midfielder, he typically turns out as a number eight, but with the capacity to feature as the deepest midfielder too. For Liverpool, this ticks key boxes as FSG look to continue their rebuilding process in the transfer market. Nunes would lower the age profile in central midfield, compensating for the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago and James Milner, while also offering much-needed cover to Fabinho.
Equally, at 23, Nunes comes with a little more experience than the likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, offering some balance. Having played in six out of seven Champions League matches this season, he has amassed minutes at the kind of level that will appeal to Liverpool and FSG. He has impressed, too, thrashing against Guardiola and Man City notwithstanding: as well as racking up two assists, he has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.10.
It is a similar story in the Portuguese league, where Nunes has averaged a score of 7.11. In terms of key passes, he is averaging 0.8 per game, just a shade below the 0.9 posted by Thiago at Liverpool. Dribbled past just 0.7 times per 90, and with an average of 1.5 tackles, he is also adept defensively.
Best-suited to a possession-heavy system, but an asset in breaking up opposition attacks too, a big transfer move for Nunes is surely only a matter of time. Yet that relatively low profile, at least in comparison to the size of the praise given out by Guardiola, means that his market value is still lagging behind some bigger names. Transfermarkt cites a price of a little under £20m — this would surely be far higher in reality, but FSG could sense something of a bargain.
Liverpool have already shown that they have no qualms about buying from the Portuguese league, forking out a sizeable sum to land Luis Díaz from Porto in the January transfer window. It shouldn’t come as a major surprise, given that the country’s top flight briefly overtook France’s Ligue 1 as Europe’s fifth-ranked league in the summer: it is a division on the rise, and FSG will be attuned to this reality.
Whether that means following the hint from Guardiola and moving for Nunes remains to be seen, but it’s a transfer that seems to firmly fit with the Liverpool transfer philosophy. If the actual fee demanded is anything close to the £20m figure, it could well be the first bargain of the Julian Ward era for FSG — particularly if he lives up to the ‘best in the world’ tag.
