First Ligue 1 hat-trick for Hwang Ui-jo… Danielle Kang wins first LPGA event of 2022

Paul, let’s begin with golf. Korean-American Danielle Kang clinched first place at the 2022 LGPA tour opener.

Yes, a great start to the new season for Danielle Kang.
At the final round of the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Florida on Sunday, Danielle Kang shot a 4 under-68 to finish at 16-under 272 overall.
She outshot her rival… Brooke Henderson of Canada… by 3 strokes.
Kang began the final round one shot behind world number one Nelly Korda but produced six birdies and two bogeys to earn her the 16-under finish.
It was her sixth LPGA title… the most recent being the Marathon Classic in August 2020.
South Korean star Park Inbee, meanwhile, finished tied for 8th at 7-under overall.

Figure skater Cha Jun-hwan has made history,… becoming the first South Korean man to win a Four Continents title.

Yes, that’s right. On Sunday, Cha captured the men’s singles title at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Estonia.
And he did so with a personal best in the short program… to secure his first major senior international title.
Cha earned 98-point-96 points… beating his previous best of 97-point-33 from 2019.
He began with a clean quadruple salchow… followed by a triple lutz and triple toe loop combo.
High scores were also given for his spins and step sequence as well as a clean triple axel.
It was also his final event before the Beijing Winter Olympics where Cha will be one of two male figure skaters representing South Korea… along with Lee Si-hyeong.

Sticking with figure skating, Kim Ye-lim picked up a bronze medal in what will be her final competition before Beijing.

Yes, bronze for Kim Ye-lim and a personal best for her as well.
At the International Skating Union Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Estonia… Kim Ye-lim scored 209-point-91 total points to finish third.
19-year-old Kim is one of two South Koreans who are headed to Beijing… the other is 17-year-old You Young.
Lee Hae-in actually won on Saturday… with a points total of 213-point-52 points.
But she is not headed for Beijing after finishing third at the trials.

To football now. The women’s national football team are currently in India for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and got off to a good start on Friday.

Yes, the Korea women’s team have now played two matches… the second ended just before 7PM against Myanmar… the score was ?-?.
The first game… against Vietnam on Friday… ended 3-0 thanks to a brace from Ji So-yun and an own goal.
Korea are in Group C with Vietnam, Myanmar and Japan.
However, host nation India have been forced to withdraw from the competition after failing to field a team against Chinese Taipei on Sunday due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Asian Cup will continue as scheduled with the group winners, runners-up and two best placed third-place teams advancing to the quarter finals.

The men’s team were also in action on Friday, picking up another comfortable friendly win.

Yes, the men’s team put four past Moldova on Friday in a friendly in Turkey.
Kim Jin-kyu and Paik Seung-ho were on the scoresheet for the second match running to give Korea a 2-goal lead… while Kwon Chang-hoon made it three just after half time.
Cho Young-wook capped off the win with an injury-time penalty after he himself was fouled in the box.
Korea take on Lebanon this Thursday in Saida at 9PM Korea time before Syria in Dubai on February 1st.
Korea sit second in Group A, two points behind Iran but with an eight-point cushion over the UAE in third with four matches left.

And a hat-trick for Hwang Ui-jo on Sunday night, good timing ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Yes, Hwang Ui-jo bagged a hat-trick and proved to be the match-winner on Sunday in Bordeaux’s 4-3 victory over Strasbourg.
It was his first in French football… and with 27 goals in total… he is now the top-scoring Asian men’s footballer to have played in the French top flight.
Hwang opened the scoring on 17 minutes and fired in a superb second… and his team’s third on 39… but Strasbourg pulled one back just before half time to make it 3-1.
Another Strasbourg goal on 57 minutes cut Bordeaux’s lead to just one goal… but Hwang popped up again on 90 minutes to complete his hat-trick… and restore his team’s two-goal lead.
Strasbourg pulled one back deep into injury time but Hwang and his team held on to secure a first win in five after suffering four straight losses.

And finally to domestic volleyball. There was a surprise visitor to Sunday’s V-League All-Star match.

Yes, Kim Yeon-koung was in Gwangju on Sunday for the V-League All-Star match.
She didn’t compete… rather she was there to pay tribute to the 1976 Montreal Olympic team as part of a special event…
