Today we visit the city of Montbéliard and their beautiful Stade Auguste Bonal!

History:

The Auguste-Bonal stadium is the main stadium in the urban area of Montbéliard and Franche-Comté; it is located on the territory of the municipality of Montbéliard. It has been the home of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard since 1931, its history is almost as old as that of the Franche-Comté club. It bears since 1945 the name of Auguste Bonal, who was a former Sochaux leader and who was killed by the Germans during the Second World War. Between 1928 and 1931, FC Sochaux played at the Stade de la Carrosserie, then at the Stade du Champ de Foire (today Stade René-Blum). The history of Stade Bonal is almost as old as that of FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. In the early 1930s, the Sochaux club attracted crowds after only three years of existence. The leaders of Peugeot and the club decide to build a stadium ex nihilo. The location was on available land near the Peugeot Automobiles forges which were built after the First World War. A small 1,000-seat stand was first set up around a lawn sown with English seeds.

In this stadium, the club’s spectators witness a unique spectacle, such as when the FCSM defeats the Valenciennes team 12-1. The most prolific match in the history of the stadium which saw Trello Abegglen score seven times. Gradually, improvements were made to the grounds. It is first upgrades with all new stands, the construction of bends and a cover that enclosed the construction. In 1935, the capacity was increased to 10,160 spectators, including 3,000 seated. To increase its capacity, the Peugeot factories lend trailers which are placed behind the cages. The Sochaux enclosure saw the finest hours of the pre-war club. On May 12th, 1935, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard became champions of France after a clear victory (3-0) against Olympique de Marseille. In July 1945, the Stade de la Forge was renamed Stade Bonal in memory of Auguste Bonal, the club’s former sports director, who was assassinated by the Germans for refusing to cooperate on April 21st, 1945. On May 22nd,1957i modernized lighting was added for a match against England’s Burnley. The Stade Bonal floodlights became the most powerful in France in 1963.

The lawn was als0 gaining the reputation of the most beautiful lawn in France. However over time, the Stade Auguste Bonal was gradually aging to the point of appearing dilapidated. In 1973, when approaching the first European Cup in its history, the leaders feared not being able to use their stadium as hosts. In the early 1990s, the question arose even more seriously about the future of the old enclosure. To evolve in the first division, the standards are strict and the FCSM was tasked with finding a solution. The date of 1998 is put forward as the date of completion of the work and was the date that reconstruction began. Thirty-five months of work (from spring 1997 to 2000 ), financed by local authorities (Community of agglomeration of the country of Montbéliard, department of Doubs, cities of Montbéliard and Sochaux), were required to offer FC Sochaux a modern enclosure, which was based on the model of the Michel-d’Ornano 3 stadium built a few years earlier in Caen.
