Manchester United have shortlisted Kylian Mbappe as they plan for life without Edinson Cavani. Cavani is expected to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the campaign. And his former Paris Saint-Germain team-mate is being eyed as a replacement.
According to ESPN, United are interested in landing Mbappe.
The France international has just a year left on his current Parc des Princes contract and, while the Ligue 1 giants want to keep their talisman, the Red Devils are eyeing a deal nonetheless.
The publication states that United want to sign Mbappe in 2022, rather than now.
But the Red Devils would be wise to jump the gun on this in order to fend off competition from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
So Express Sport will now take a look at four players United will be wise to include in a potential swap deal to convince Mauricio Pochettino’s team into selling up.
PSG have also been long-term admirers of Anthony Martial.
The Merseyside giants are set to give Real Madrid a run for their money in the battle to sign PSG star Kylian Mbappe this summer. France international has been one of the most coveted wingers across Europe ever since his spectacular breakthrough campaign with Monaco in 2016/17.
Following that stellar season, Mbappe moved to Paris, initially on loan, before the transfer was made permanent in 2018. During his time in PSG, Kylian has cemented his status as one of the most talented young footballers in the game currently, producing prolific numbers year after year.
Indeed, the 22-year-old forward has already plundered 132 goals in only 171 matches for the Parisians, 42 of which came in the 2020/21 season from just games. The French forward, for quite a few years now, has been strongly linked with a transfer to Real Madrid.
La Liga giants have held a long-standing interest in Mbappe, and with his deal with PSG expiring in a year, the time looks right for Florentino Perez & co. to launch a swoop for the attacker. Given how over-reliant Los Blancos have been on Karim Benzema in the past couple of campaigns, the investment would be more than justified as well.
Ligue 1 giants, Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo remains confident that the team can convince Kylian Mbappe to remain beyond the end of his current deal.
Mbappe’s contract at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of this campaign, and he will be able to begin talks with an overseas team over a free transfer in the summer from January 1.
La Liga giants, Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for the 22-year-old and are still the clear front-runners for his services, while the Merseyside Reds have also been credited with a long-standing interest.
Kylian Mbappe became the second-most expensive player of all time when he joined Ligue 1 giants, PSG from their rivals Monaco, so losing him for free would represent a substantial loss for the Ligue 1 outfit both on and off the pitch.
The France international looks increasingly likely to leave next summer, but Leonardo insists that PSG still have “good possibilities” to keep a player he believes pips teammate Lionel Messi as the “best player in the world”.
“It’s a very special situation because we are talking about the best player in the world who is coming to the end of his contract. We can say that there were times when we discussed more warmly, but that is part of building a relationship,” Leonardo told JDD.
